Education Committee Mumbai Branch

The Education Committee Mumbai Branch, AIWC is one of the four main projects undertaken by the Mumbai Branch. The Mumbai Branch, AIWC received Madam Luther’s report and a project proposal on “Adult Literacy’’ in 1985. Keeping in view the alarming condition of illiteracy amongst women in India, the Mumbai Branch, AIWC decided to take up Adult Education for women as one of their mainstream activities. A separate Committee was then formed by the Mumbai Branch.

The State Resource Centre at Indian Institute of Education of Pune was assigned the work of preparing literacy primers in 7 Indian Languages to the Education Committee, AWIC. The volunteers were trained in Adult Literacy Campaign of the National Literacy mission of SAHAS (Saksharta Samiti) a part of CORO (Committee Resource Organisation) for literacy. We had taken up the students of Standard VIII and IX from 4 Schools in Sion for the “Each One Teach One’’ method of spreading literacy. Training was given to them and kits were distributed.

Through this Literacy Campaign, more than 500 women were made literate through our Centre at Dharavi. They were not only taught the ‘3Rs’ but we also started classes for tailoring, embroidery, mehendi, soft toy-making etc., which were vocational and income generating. A Mahila Mandal of learners and other women from the Dharavi slums were formed. Awareness programmes, competitions, picnics, medical camps, legal literacy camps and seminars, group insurance Policy. Campaign against various social and cultural evils were organised for local communities considering their needs and requirements.

We run two Balwadis and a Crèche. We serve mid-day meals sponsored by Dr. Suresh Agrawal. Tuition Class for children from standard I st to S.S.C., at our Panchsheel Centre, Dharavi. We have started a library at Pragati Centre, Dharavi where children read books between 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. We have a collection of 200 story books donated by Shell Foundation. We have started newspapers also.

The Education Committee participated in the Awabai Trust Project “Clean Mumbai Green Mumbai” in 2009. The programme on “Segregation of Garbage” was highly appreciated and we were awarded a first prize of Rs.30000 and a Trophy.

A women’s rally was organised on 8th March, 2010 which was telecast by Doordarshan channel. The report of the same was sent to the Central Office, Delhi which was published in the House Magazine “Roshni”.

We pay tribute and respect to the pioneers Smt. Tara Shah, Late Smt. Laxmi Sharma, Late Smt. Usha Jairam, Smt. Rama Damania, Smt. Vanita Shah and Late Smt. Meera Kulkarni and Smt. Pramila Kulkarni for their hard work, dedication and foresight. The Education Committee could achieve its name and fame and implement the multifarious activities with success only with their help.
